What’s the process of getting a crown?

Prior to the advent of CEREC technology, receiving a dental crown typically involved 2-3 appointments and the often uncomfortable experience of wearing a temporary crown. However, with the introduction of modern techniques and technology, the process of getting a crown has become significantly more convenient.

The benefits of CEREC crowns include:

  • Precise and comfortable digital 3D scanning.
  • The possibility of completing the entire treatment in just one visit.

Treatment

Examining and preparing the tooth

During a previous visit, we would have assessed your tooth and determined its suitability for a crown. This decision might be due to decay, a large filling, a root canal, or a crack in the tooth. At the appointment for the crown fitting, we will numb the area and then shape the tooth to ensure it’s ready to receive the crown.

Shaping the Crown

After preparing your tooth, we’ll employ our CEREC scanner to capture a highly precise digital impression of your mouth, eliminating the need for traditional impressions or trays. This 3D scan creates a digital model of your mouth, which serves as the basis for designing your crown. Your porcelain crown is then crafted on-site while you wait, using our in-house CEREC milling unit.

Placing the Crown

We’ll fit the crown and make necessary adjustments to ensure it feels comfortable and fits properly. Your new crown will be cemented into place immediately, eliminating the need for a second appointment or a temporary crown. Following a final polish, your new crown will be ready for immediate use.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

A local anesthetic will be used for your crown appointment. If you would like to discuss additional options for sedation, please let us know. Your comfort is a priority for us.

With proper care and maintenance, a crown can last 5 – 10 years or more.

A dental crown is maintained just like a natural tooth. They can break and are vulnerable to decay. It is essential to brush and floss regularly to keep your crown and surrounding tissues, healthy and clean. Regular cleanings and checkups at your dentist are essential to your oral health.

You must speak with your insurance provider to find out if they will cover your crown. After your initial consultation, we can provide you with a quote to take to your insurance provider.

What Our Patients are Saying

Hannah Weinstangel

We are so happy with the care given by Dr. Chin to our whole family. She is kind, knowledgeable, and skilled. Our preschooler actually looks forward to going to the dentist - which says a lot about Dr. Chin’s approach! We recommend her to all our friends. The staff at Bloor West Dental Group are also consistently kind and helpful, and we have always had good experiences with the hygienists who do our teeth cleaning.
