What’s the process of getting a crown?

Before CEREC technology came around, getting a crown took 2-3 appointments and required a notoriously uncomfortable temporary crown. Thanks to new techniques and technology, getting your crown is easier than ever.

CEREC crowns offer the following advantages:
  • Highly accurate and comfortable digital 3D scan.
  • Complete treatment in as little as one visit.

Examining and preparing the tooth

At an earlier appointment, your tooth would have been examined and identified as a candidate for a crown. The tooth may have decay, a large filling, a root canal or a crack. At the crown appointment, we will anesthetize the area, and prepare the tooth to receive the crown.

Shaping the Crown

Once your tooth has been prepared, we will use our CEREC scanner to make a highly accurate digital impression of your mouth. We no longer require impressions or the use of trays. This 3D scan is used to create a digital model of your mouth, which we will use to design your crown. Your porcelain crown is then made while you wait with our in-house CEREC milling unit.

Placing the Crown

We will try the crown in and make a few adjustments to ensure that it feels right and fits well. Your new crown will be cemented in place right away. No second appointment or temporary crown is needed. After a final polish, your new crown is ready for use.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

A local anesthetic will be used for your crown appointment. If you would like to discuss additional options for sedation, please let us know. Your comfort is a priority for us.

With proper care and maintenance, a crown can last 5 – 10 years or more.

A dental crown is maintained just like a natural tooth. They can break and are vulnerable to decay. It is essential to brush and floss regularly to keep your crown and surrounding tissues, healthy and clean. Regular cleanings and checkups at your dentist are essential to your oral health.

You must speak with your insurance provider to find out if they will cover your crown. After your initial consultation, we can provide you with a quote to take to your insurance provider.
