What are Dental Bridges?
There are four primary styles of dental bridges that you can receive:
- Traditional. A pontic (artificial tooth) fills in the gap left by a missing tooth. Two abutments, usually dental crowns, sit on the teeth on both sides of the pontic to hold it in place.
- Cantilever. Dentists advise Cantilever bridges if you only have one tooth to support the structure.
- Maryland. Instead of dental crowns, a special resin framework is attached to the back of the teeth bordering the gap in your smile.
- Implant-Supported. Titanium implants are drilled in the jaw, and the bridge is situated on top. The implants offer an extremely solid foundation, preventing the structure from shifting or falling out.
While other metals can be used, most bridges are made from porcelain because it’s highly resistant to staining and can withstand biting and chewing. Impressions or 3D scans are taken to record your oral dimensions. This information guides lab technicians as they create your restoration, ensuring that it fits you precisely.

What to Expect
When you visit Bloor West for a dental bridge, we’ll get your smile back to normal in just one session. After an initial examination and impressions are taken, you’ll be given a temporary bridge to help preserve your smile while you wait for a permanent one – this may take around 2 weeks. Once it’s ready, we’ll have you return to the clinic to adhere it to your teeth. Lastly, the bridge will be polished.
Our team will carefully assess your smile and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that it’s comfortable and you’re satisfied with the results.
